Guide for the Efficient Speedstream 5660 Getting Started:
Before beginning your installation please make sure you have:
If
you do not have a NIC installed, you may purchase one at most computer
retailers. A NIC MUST be
installed prior to beginning installation.
Installation:
The following pages contain detailed instructions for configuring your
DSL service. The installation
consists of the following major steps:
Troubleshooting:
The end of the Installation
Guide contains information to help you troubleshoot common problems encountered
with new DSL installations. If
after following the suggestions in this guide, you still need further technical
assistance, call our DSL Technical Assistance Center at 1-888-292-3827. Step 1:
Locate the filters that were
included in your Efficient Speedstream 5660 router box.
Three line filters, one wall-mount line filter, and one two-to-one
adapter should be included with your box. With DSL you can talk on
your phone and surf the Internet at the same time, but transmitting data over
the telephone line can cause electrical "noise" that you can hear on
your phone. Line filters eliminate
this noise and also protect the DSL signal from "noise" caused by your
telephone. IMPORTANT!
The line filter has a "phone" side and a "line" side
marked on the filter. Be sure to
install filters correctly or the DSL service may not work properly.
Step 2:
Install filters on all devices (such as phones, fax machines, or caller
ID boxes) that share the same telephone number as your DSL account. Line Filter For each phone or phone
accessory that shares the same telephone number as your DSL account:
Wall Mounted Filter Install wall mounted
filters for a wall mount phone:
Two-to-One Adapter
(optional use) If the Efficient
Speedstream 5660 and another phone accessory will share the same wall jack, it
may be necessary to install a two-to-one adapter.
IMPORTANT!
Do NOT put a filter on the phone cable between the Efficient
Speedstream 5660 DSL router and the phone jack. Step 3:
Connect the power adapter to the appropriate port on the back of the
Efficient Speedstream 5660. Push
the button on the back of the router to the 'In' position.
The Efficient Speedstream 5660's 'sys' light will briefly turn yellow for
a few seconds, then solid green. If
this light does not come on, double-check your power connections. Step 4:
Locate the two Ethernet cables
in the Efficient Speedstream 5660 box. One
of these cables is a standard "straight" Ethernet cable.
The other is a "crossover" Ethernet cable.
These cables should be labeled. If
you do not have an Ethernet hub, connect the "straight" Ethernet cable
from the Ethernet card in your computer to the Ethernet port on the back of the
Efficient Speedstream 5660. If you
have an Ethernet hub with an available port and wish to use this to connect
multiple PCs to the internet, connect the "crossover" Ethernet cable
from the open port on the Ethernet hub to the Ethernet port on the back of the
Efficient Speedstream 5660. Once
properly cabled, the 'enet' light on the front of the Speedstream will turn
green. The Ethernet port on the
back of your computer should look like a "big phone jack".
The supplied Ethernet cable should fit the Ethernet port on your computer
perfectly, but will not fit into a standard phone jack Step 5:
Connect the supplied phone
cable between your phone jack and the phone port on the back of the Efficient
Speedstream 5660. IMPORTANT!
Do NOT install a filter on this line or the DSL service may not
function properly.
Note:
The management cable also
included with your Efficient Networks Speedstream 5660 Kit will not be used
during installation. Steps
6-12 are for Windstream Internet customers and are also valid for the majority of
Internet service providers. Windstream
Internet subscribers should consult the supplied fulfillment letter for username
and password information. If you
are not an Windstream Internet customer, and you are unsure if these settings are
appropriate, then please contact your provider to verify settings as well as
username and password information. NOTE:

refer to the Troubleshooting section to help diagnose your problem. Troubleshooting: The following are common
problems encountered when installing a DSL line. Most can be diagnosed by watching the lights on the front
panel of the Efficient Speedstream 5660. If the DSL light is
flashing alternating yellow and green, follow these steps: a)
Make sure the line from the correct phone jack (the one with DSL signal
on it) is plugged into the correct port on the rear panel of the Efficient
Speedstream 5660. b)
Make sure you do NOT have a filter installed between the wall jack
and the Efficient Speedstream 5660. c)
Make sure that all phones, fax machines, caller ID boxes, etc., have a
filter and that the filter is correctly installed (phone side of filter
to phone, line side of filter to wall jack).
The filter should be installed between the wall and the device. d)
Reset the Efficient Speedstream 5660 by pushing the power switch on the
rear panel. e)
If the problem still exists call 1-888-292-3827 for assistance. DSL Security Information: Windstream currently
distributes Efficient Speedstream 5660 routers for DSL access. Because these routers run NAPT (Network Address Port
Translations) our DSL customers are less vulnerable to hacking attempts.
In simple terms, NAPT means that the IP address is delivered to the
router, and not to the PC itself. Therefore,
it is more difficult for hackers to reach your PC (although not impossible). Customers can take
certain precautions to further reduce their vulnerability to hackers. Ensure that your PC's
file-sharing features are not enabled. Windows 98/NT/ME 1)
