Installation Guide for the Cisco 67x

Getting Started:  Before beginning your installation please make sure you have:

  • Your username and password for your Internet account.  If you do not remember your username and password; 1)  Windstream Internet customers please call 1-888-292-3827 or 2)  Non-Windstream Internet customers please contact your Internet Service Provider.
  • An Ethernet (10,100, or 10/100 Mbps) Network Interface Card (NIC) properly installed in your computer.

If you do not have a NIC installed, you may purchase one at most computer retailers.  A NIC MUST be installed prior to beginning installation.

  • It may be helpful to print this documentation for reference during installation.

Installation:  The following pages contain detailed instructions for configuring your DSL service.  The installation consists of the following major steps:

  • Installation of filters on all telephones and other analog devices in your home.
  • Configuration of your Cisco 67x
  • Configuration of your web browser and email client.  (optional)

Troubleshooting:  The end of the Installation Guide contains information to help you troubleshoot common problems encountered with new DSL installations.  If after following the suggestions in this guide, you still need further technical assistance, call our DSL Technical Assistance Center at 1-888-292-3827.

Step 1:  Locate the filters that were included in your Cisco 67x router box.  Three line filters and one wall-mount line filter should be included with your box.

With DSL you can talk on your phone and surf the Internet at the same time, but transmitting data over the telephone line can cause electrical "noise" that you can hear on your phone.  Line filters eliminate this noise and also protect the DSL signal from "noise" caused by your telephone.

IMPORTANT!  The line filter has a "phone" side and a "wall" side marked on the filter.  Be sure to install filters correctly or the DSL service may not work properly.

Step 2:  Install filters on all devices (such as phones, fax machines, or caller ID boxes) that share the same telephone number as your DSL account.  Be sure to plug the cord from the phone set into the side of the filter labeled PHONE.  Plug the cord from the phone set into the side of the filter labeled WALL.

IMPORTANT! Do NOT put a filter between the Cisco 67x DSL router and the wall.

Put filters on all phones, fax machines, etc., but do NOT put one on the Cisco 67x.

Step 3:  Locate the Management Cable in the Cisco DSL router box.

Step 4:  Plug the DB-9 connector on the Management Cable into a serial port, preferably COM1, on the back of your computer.  If COM1 is not available, plug the cable into COM2*.  Plug the clear plastic RJ-45 connector into the MGMT port on the back of the Cisco 67x DSL router.  Remember whether you use COM1 or COM2, you will need this information later when you configure your Cisco 67x.

*NOTE: In some cases COM2 is a 25-pin connector and will not connect the Management Cable's 9-pin connector.  If this occurs you may have to purchase a DB-9 to DB-25 adapter at a computer retailer since one is not included with the Cisco 67x.

Step 5:  Connect the power cable to the PWR port on the back of the Cisco 67x as shown.

The Cisco 67x's green POWER light will come on when the modem receives power.  If this light does not come on, double-check your power connections.

The Cisco 67x's red ALARM light should also come on briefly when the Cisco 67x is plugged in.  If this light stays on, you may have a defective router.

Step 6:  Connect the supplied phone cable between your phone jack and the WALL port on the Cisco 67x as shown.

IMPORTANT!  Do NOT install a filter on this line or the DSL service may not function properly.

Step 7:  Connect the Ethernet cable from the Ethenet card in your computer to the ENET port on the Cisco 67x as shown.  If your Ethernet card came with an Ethernet "straight" cable, do not use it.  Use the supplied "crossover" cable instead.

The Ethernet port on the back of your computer should look like a "big phone jack".  The supplied Ethernet cable should fit the Ethernet port on your computer perfectly but will not fit into a standard phone jack.

NOTE:  After you connect the Ethernet cable, the LAN LNK light on the front of the Cisco 67x should turn green.  If it does not, then there may be a problem with your Ethernet card installation.

Step 8:  Your Cisco 67x should now have four cables attached as shown.  If so, your Cisco 67x is completely connected!

You are now ready to configure your Ethernet card for DSL service.

Steps 9-11 are for Windstream Internet customers and are also valid for the majority of Internet service providers.  Windstream Internet subscribers should consult the supplied fulfillment letter for username and password information.  If you are not an Windstream Internet customer, and you are unsure if these settings are appropriate, then please contact your provider to verify settings as well as username and password information.

Troubleshooting:

The following are common problems encountered when installing a DSL line.  Most can be diagnosed by watching the WAN LNK light on the front panel of the Cisco 67x.

If the WAN LNK light never comes on:

a)       Cycle the power on the Cisco 67x by removing the power cord and plugging it back in.

b)       If this does not fix the problem, try reconfiguring your Cisco 67x using the ADSL Configuration Utility.

c)       If the problem still exists call 1-888-292-3827.

If the Alarm Light is always on or flashing:

If the alarm light is flashing or on constantly call 1-888-292-3827 for assistance.

If the LAN LNK light is not on, follow these steps:

            a)       Make sure the Ethernet cable supplied with the Cisco 67x is connected between your PC and the ENET jack on the back of the Cisco 67x.

b)       Make sure you use the Ethernet "crossover" able that came with the Cisco 67x.  Many Ethernet cables are "straight" Ethernet cables for use when connecting the Cisco 67x to an Ethernet hub or switch.  To connect your Cisco 67x directly to an Ethernet card you need a "crossover" Ethernet cable.

c)       Make sure your Ethernet card is properly installed (refer to the instructions that came with your Ethernet card).

  DSL Security Information:

Windstream currently distributes Cisco 67x routers for DSL access.  Because these routers run NAT (Network Address Translation) our DSL customers are less vulnerable to hacking attempts.  In simple terms, NAT means that the IP address is delivered to the router, and not to the PC itself.  Therefore, it is more difficult for hackers to reach your PC (although not impossible).

Customers can take certain precautions to further reduce their vulnerability to hackers.

Ensure that your PC's file-sharing features are not enabled.

Windows 98/NT/ME
